Tennis Sweeps the Day at Paseo

The Grand Canyon University tennis teams rolled to three wins today at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.

The day opened with the women taking an 8-1 win over Hawai’i Hilo.

The Antelopes swept the doubles competition to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. Katharina Mittag and Frederique Van de Velde won 8-0 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Cecilia Vergnet and Justine Majan also won 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches on the ladies side were highlighted by Priscilla Annoual's 6-2, 6-0 win at No.2.

“It was another good win for the ladies,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “They had two matches yesterday and came in a bit banged up, but they got off to a great start. In singles play, Hilo put up a great fight. But our girls showed themselves well and fought hard to pick up the win.”

The men began their day by also defeating Hilo, 8-1.

The men swept all six singles matches after taking two of three in the doubles round.

Stephane Murray stepped into the No. 1 singles slot, filling in for Frederic Schoelzel, winning 6-1, 6-3. Bastien Tonus made quick work in the No. 5 singles draw, winning 6-0, 6-0. Jacob Spizman filled in well at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

“I saw what I wanted to see this morning,” said Prudhomme. “We played without our No.1 singles player and had to move everyone up a spot and we still won all of the singles matches. Hilo is a tough team and they always test us.”

The men had to recover quickly as they returned this evening to face Western New Mexico.

The Antelopes jumped on the Mustangs to win all three doubles matches. Patrice Giraldi and Peter Kazianschuetz at No.2 doubles won a thrilling 9-8 match, taking the match tiebreaker, 7-3.

Murray won at the No.1 singles for the second-straight match, filling in for Schoelzel, who missed due to illiness. Giraldi won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot, while Kevin Anderson picked up a big 6-3, 7-5 victory in the No. 6 spot.

“It was a relief to get this one tonight,” added Prudhomme. “We are a strong enough team to win that match. It is a relief because the other team fought hard and played well. We pulled a couple of our starters for various reasons, but it was another great display of our depth that we have this year.”

The Grand Canyon women’s team will be in action at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow when they face Academy of Art. The men will face a tough test with a match against UC San Diego at 6:30 p.m. Both will be played at the Paseo Racquet Center.
