The Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team kicked off the 2012 campaign this past weekend with a match-up against nationally-ranked and Division I member Cal Poly in Tucson, Ariz.
The Antelopes dropped the match, 6-1, but found many positives to take away from the contest.
“We were hoping to pull off an upset by beating a nationally-ranked D-I team, but we will have to settle for a hard-fought match against tough competition,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “This was a great way to start the season to get our guys ready for our D-II competition that's coming up this week. I saw what I wanted to see to know we have one of the best D-II teams in the country, especially after the three close doubles sets to start off the morning.”
GCU lost all three doubles matches to begin the dual, but all were tightly contested. The No. 1 duo of
Frederic Schoelzel and
Stephane Murray fell 8-7 in their opening match of the season.
Peter Kazianschuetz and
Patrice Giraldi lost at five, while
Bastien Tonus and
Ahmad Saleem fell at 6.
Kazianschuetz picked up GCU’s lone point after his opponent retired due to injury in the No. 3 singles match.
The other singles matches featured many competitive sets; highlighted by Saleem’s match at the No. 4 singles. Saleem took Jordan Bridge to the limit, losing 5-7 in the opening set. He later dropped the match and second set 1-6.
Grand Canyon will be put to the test this week, playing six matches against quality opponents. The stretch begins on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with a match against BYU-Hawai’i at the Paseo Racquet Center located in Glendale, Ariz. First serve will be at 9 a.m.
