The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped the first game of their eight-game Hawaiian road trip tonight, losing 5-2 to Hawai’i Pacific at Hans L’ Orange Park in Waipahu, Hawai’i.
GCU falls to 4-9 overall, 2-7 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU improved to 8-0, 5-0 in the league.
Grand Canyon grabbed the early lead, scoring a run in the first.
Tagg Duce reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by
Michael Pomeroy.
Derek Mendoza followed with a single to left to score Duce and give the ‘Lopes a 1-0 lead.
Nick Chapman led off the fifth inning with a double and would later score on a
Derek Mendoza single, giving GCU a 2-0 lead.
The Sea Warriors rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Antelopes’ starter,
Brady Wager, fanned the first two batters to start the inning. HPU’s Wade Tamaru then reached on error and scored on a Ryan Morihara single. Blake Amaral would later double home Morihara to put the Sea Warriors up 3-2.
Wager (1-3) started and was charged with the loss. Wager went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs (all unearned) on six hits. He fanned six batters and walked three.
Cody Repenning and
Kyle Weber each allowed a run in relief of Wager.
Coltin White tossed a scoreless eighth.
Mendoza led the ‘Lopes offensively, going 3-for -4 with two RBI. He improved his season average to .439 (18-for-41).
Canyon will return to Hans L’ Orange Park for a doubleheader with the Sea Warriors tomorrow, Feb. 25. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (Arizona time).
