The Grand Canyon University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader tonight with Hawai’i Pacific at Hans L’ Orange Park in Waipahu, Hawai’i. The Antelopes lost 2-1 in game one and fell 2-1 in nine innings (scheduled seven-inning game) in game two.
Grand Canyon’s overall record now stands at 4-11, 2-9 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU remained perfect on the season, improving to 10-0, 7-0 in the league.
The day was one for the pitchers as the two staffs combined to give up only six runs on 28 hits in 16 innings of play.
Grand Canyon fell in the opener despite a solid outing from freshman
Jorge Perez (0-2). Perez, making his second start of the season, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. He fanned four while walking one.
HPU got on the board early, scoring an unearned run in the first inning. The Sea Warriors went up 2-0 with a run in the second.
Canyon cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth.
Michael Pomeroy got things started for GCU with a two-out double. He would steal third and then score on an infield hit by
Derek Mendoza.
GCU threatened to tie the game in the seventh.
Tanner Hoechlin led off the inning with a single to left.
Nick Chapman entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to second when
Lucas Leifeld singled to left. Sea Warrior starter, John Albert, was able to induce
Aaron Mees into a pop out and
P.J. Garcia into a ground out to end the threat and the game.
Pomeroy, Mendoza and Leifeld each had two hits in the opener. The Antelopes left six on base during the game.
The nightcap showcased another outstanding battle between the two pitching staffs.
Freshman
Coley Bruns made his first start of the season, not allowing a run over 4.2 innings. He struck out five, with one walk.
Mark Jarrett followed Bruns and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings.
The only runs of the game came during the ninth inning.
Leifeld drew a one out walk and was removed for a pinch runner in
A.J. Pearson. Pearson promptly stole second to move into scoring position.
Charles Wagner would later reach on a third base error that allowed Pearson to score and give GCU the 1-0 lead.
GCU was within one out of the win in the bottom of the ninth, but the Sea Warriors’ Derek Nakasato singled home two runs off reliever
Cody Repenning (1-2) to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Canyon pitchers battled all night and was evident when Jarrett got Rylan Morihara to bounce into a 3-2-3 double play to eliminate a bases loaded jam in the seventh.
Harlyn Griffith finished with two hits to lead Grand Canyon in game two.
The two teams will wrap up this four-game set with a single game tomorrow at 3 p.m. (Arizona time) at Hans L’ Orange Park. The Antelopes will then make the trip to the Big Island where they will open a four-game series with Hawai’i Hilo on Feb. 29.
