The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer program announced that they have signed Susana Zigante to a National Letter of Intent. Zigante is the starting goalkeeper for the U-19 Croatian National Team who qualified for the European Cup Championships during the 2010-11 season where she played in both the first and second rounds. She first made the U-19 squad at age 15 and has competed against such teams as Russia, Ireland, Cypress, England, Portugal, Norway, Holland, and Bulgaria.
As a dual citizen of USA and Croatia, Zigante was also a member of the New York State West Olympic Development Program from 2007-09 and was named a TOP Drawer Soccer Player to Watch.
"Suzie is a great kid, a wonderful athlete and will completely shine here at GCU,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “She comes from a fantastic soccer pedigree and this has obviously rubbed off in her work ethic and determination to succeed at the highest levels of the game. Her experience playing for the Croatian National Team against some of the top talent in the world will help elevate our program to the next level. With a 4.0 GPA coming into GCU, she is an exceptional student and will thrive down here in the Valley of the Sun."
Zigante will graduate this spring and currently maintains a 4.0 GPA at Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, N.C. Included among her many team achievements are North Carolina Youth Soccer Association State Cup Finalists from 2006-09, United States Youth Soccer Association Region III Premier League in 2008-09, Orange Classic Champions in 2008, Jefferson Cup Finalists in 2009, CASL Shootout Finalists in 2007 and US Club National Championship Finalists in 2007.
Zigante comes from a high performance soccer background as her mother, Gretchen, was a former US National Team player, first US women's professional soccer player and former head women's soccer coach at Cornell University. Her father, Ziggy, was a professional soccer player in the former Yugoslavia, Austria, England, and the United States, playing for teams that included Dinamo Zagreb, Plamen –Grahorova(futsal), FC Kapfenburg, FC Corinthinans, Wichita Wings, and the San Diego Sockers. Ziggy has worked with premier clubs, as well as college, national and professional teams and players. He has also assisted the US National team, the MLS San Jose Clash, San Diego Sockers and Cornell University, among many others. He has served as a national director for Soccer Plus Goalkeeping Camps for over 22 years.
"Along with some of the other top international and home grown players here at GCU, the 2012 team promises to be an exciting team to watch,” added Gill. “I can't wait for our preseason camp to begin and get all the new recruits acclimatized to the hot weather and attacking style of play."
