THE ‘LOPES...Are playing the first of four games against Dixie State...the two teams last faced off on April 22, 2011 when they split a doubleheader in St. George.
vs. DIXIE STATE--The Antelopes and Red Storm are meeting for the first time this season and first time since a 6-1 loss in the second game of a doubleheader in St. George on April 22, 2011...the ‘Lopes own a 10-19 overall record against Dixie State...the Red Storm were selected to win the PacWest.
LAST TIME OUT--The ‘Lopes split their doubleheader at Cal Baptist on Sunday, Feb. 12, falling in the first game, 7-5, and winning the series finale, 7-4...Justin Lindsey improved to 2-0 as the ‘Lopes exploded for seven runs in the second inning of the second contest.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN--The Antelopes enter the 2012 season with a veteran roster, featuring 12 seniors, 12 juniors, three sophomores and seven freshmen.
PACWEST PREDICTIONS--Grand Canyon was predicted to finish fourth in the PacWest Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches...GCU received 21 points in the poll...Dixie State was picked for the top spot in the poll, garnering four first place votes...Cal Baptist received two first-place votes for second and Hawai’i Pacific came in third. Hawai’i Hilo was seen as a fifth-place finisher by the coaches, with Academy of Art rounding out the field.
MORE POLLS--The ‘Lopes fell from the West Region rankings last week, after appearing at No 10 in the preseason poll. Dixie enters tonight ranked fourth in the West Region in the NCBWA poll. They just missed being in the top-25 nationally, finishing first among schools “also receiving votes”. Hawai’i Pacific is currently in ninth place in the latest West Region poll. Colorado Mesa, GCU’s first opponent, is ranked No. 24 nationally.
HOME SLATE--Grand Canyon’s home schedule will feature 24 games this season...last season the ‘Lopes were 14-11 at Brazell Stadium and 16-9 in 2010.
CAN IT GET ANY TOUGHER--Andy Stankiewicz did not mess around in seeing what type of team he had this season, scheduling one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Colorado Mesa, GCU’s first opponent, made it to the World Series three years ago and has been in the postseason three-straight seasons. Then there is a three-game road trip to play Baseball America’s preseason No. 1 University of Tampa. Also on the schedule is a single game at Cal Poly Pomona. Pomona is ranked No. 6 in the NCBWA National Poll. GCU will close out the season with a two-game set at perennial powerhouse UC San Diego.
STARTING PITCHER BREAKDOWN--Justin Lindsey leads all ‘Lopes starters with a 2-0 record and 4.91 ERA in two starts...Lindsey has tossed a team-high 11.0 innings...David Wydeven also owns a 4.91 ERA in two starts...Brady Wager leads the team with 14 strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN--Mike Jarrett has a conference-leading two saves and 1.50 ERA (1 ER in 6.0 IP) in 4 relief appearances.
HITTING NOTES--The Antelopes are batting .279 (69-for-247) through eight games this season, fourth-best in the conference...their 69 hits, 15 doubles and four home runs are second only to Cal Baptist (99, 23 and six).
ON THE MOUND--The Antelopes pitching staff has collected 51 strikeouts and only 14 walks so far this season for a 3.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio...the ‘Lopes rank second in the PacWest in strikeouts.
GLOVE WORK--The Antelopes have committed 13 errors through eight games this season for a .955 fielding percentage, fourth-best in the conference.
