The Grand Canyon University baseball team split a doubleheader with Dixie State tonight, dropping the opener 7-2 and winning the nightcap 4-3, at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
GCU is now 4-6 overall, 2-4 in the Pacific West Conference. DSC now stands at 5-1, 5-1 in the league.
After falling in the opener and trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning of game two, the Antelopes began to mount a comeback.
P.J. Garcia led off the sixth inning with a single and scored when
Michael Pomeroy doubled to deep left center. The Antelopes cut the lead to 3-2 in bizarre fashion. With the bases loaded,
Lucas Leifeld hit a high pop up in the infield that Dixie third baseman Yuto Kata misplayed. Leifeld was ruled out on the play due to the infield fly rule, but Kata picked up the dropped ball and threw wildly to the plate, allowing Pomeroy to score.
Jackie Samora followed it up with a solid single to center to score
Trevor Santor and tie the game at 3.
The ‘Lopes would then draw four consecutive walks in the seventh inning from
Ernesto Ortiz, Garcia, Pomeroy and
Derek Mendoza for the literal “walk-off” win.
Brady Wager (1-2) picked up the win, tossing a complete game. He allowed three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.
“Brady did a great job of keeping us in the game,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “We didn’t do a great job of swinging the bats tonight. We got a big hit by Jackie Samora to tie things up for us in the sixth. But Brady made some real big pitches when he had to and really kept us in that game. He is really starting to grow up.”
Jorge Perez made his first start in a GCU uniform during game one and was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 3.0 innings of work.
“I think Jorge pitched great tonight,” added Stankiewicz. “He gave up the solo homer, but that is okay. Those won’t beat you. He was on a pitch count tonight, but we are really pleased with his development. If he stays healthy we will have a nice one-two punch with him and Wager."
Pomeroy led the team after going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Garcia, Mendoza,
Tagg Duce and
Harlyn Griffiths also collected a hit in the game.
Dixie State took an early 2-0 lead after two innings and tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning. The Red Storm then added two runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back homers from Joe Andrade and Mitch Manning.
The ‘Lopes scored both of their runs in the game’s final half inning after Pomeroy reached base via hit by pitch and scored on a walk to Griffiths with the bases loaded. Mendoza also came around to score on a wild pitch.
The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow with another doubleheader at Brazell Stadium. Game one will be a nine-inning affair beginning at 1 p.m. Game two will be a seven-inning game and be played approximately 30 minutes after the first game.
