The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped a pair of games today, losing 13-4 and 3-2 to Dixie State at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
The losses drop the ‘Lopes to 4-8, 2-6 in the Pacific West Conference. Dixie State, ranked No. 4 in the West Region, improved to 7-1 overall and in the league.
GCU starter
David Wydeven was charged with the loss in the opener after allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings.
Kyle Weber (1.1) and
Adam Serrano (1.0) combined for 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the 'Lopes.
Dixie State scored three runs in the first inning to open the scoring and went on to plate three runs in the second and one run in the third and fourth innings. The ‘Lopes chipped away as they scored a run in each of the first four innings to keep the Red Storm within reach at 8-4. Dixie State then scored four runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 12-4 and tacked on another run in the ninth while holding GCU scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Michael Pomeroy led the offensive effort for the ‘Lopes after going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
Ernesto Ortiz added two hits and scored two runs.
Canyon’s
Justin Lindsey and Dixie’s Sam Friend matched up in a pitchers dual in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The two quickly worked through two scoreless innings to begin the game.
GCU got on the scoreboard first, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. Ortiz reached on error with one out in the inning and then stole second base. Garcia and Pomeroy followed with walks to load the bases. Friend was called for a balk, plating Ortiz for a 1-0 ‘Lopes lead.
Derek Mendoza followed with an infield single to increase to the lead to 2-0.
The game stayed that way until the sixth, when Yuto Kata reached on an infield single to start the inning. Garret Nash reached on an error, putting runners at second and third. Colton Yack tied the score with a single to center and would later score on a Joe Andrade single to give the Red Storm the 3-2 lead.
GCU would load the bases in the sixth with one out, but Dixie closer Daniel Zapata pitched out of the the jam. The Antelopes mounted a two-out rally in the seventh on base hits by Pomeroy and Mendoza, but Zapata induced
Tagg Duce into a ground out to end the game.
Pomeroy and Mendoza each finished the game with two hits.
Lindsey suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings. He fanned five without a walk.
“Any time you lose two it’s frustrating,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “We understand that Dixie is a good club. They hit us hard in game one. Game two was frustrating as well. Justin pitched well enough to get us a win. He had some tough luck with a dropped ball in the sixth. We gave ourselves chances late and it was good to see the guys continue to compete. They certainly scrapped, but we understand a loss is a loss and a win is a win and today we lost two. Frustrated is probably the right word for the day.”
The Antelopes will now embark on an eight-game, nine-day trip to Hawai’i. They will open play with a doubleheader against Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 24 in Waipahu, Hawai’i.
