The Grand Canyon University women's basketball team will play tonight in Riverside, Calif. against PacWest foe Cal Baptist. Tipoff is schedlued for 6:30 p.m. (Arizona Time). The 'Lopes and Lancers both trail Dixie State and Academy of Art by a half game in the conference standings.
GAME NOTES
VS. CAL BAPTIST: GCU owns a 3-1 record against new Pacific West Conference member Cal Baptist. The ‘Lopes will be facing the Lancers for the first time since an 86-40 win on Dec. 16, 1993 on the road. Cal Baptist is 16-3 overall and owns a 9-2 mark in the conference.
ALMOST HOME: The ‘Lopes return to the road for a matchup against Cal Baptist tonight with tipoff slated for 6:30 p.m. Arizona time. Following the contest, GCU will play five of their final six regular season games at home, including three straight beginning on Feb. 13 vs. Academy of Art.
CENTURY MARK: Head coach Trent May won his 100
th game at the helm of GCU’s women’s basketball program on Feb. 4 at Hawai’i Hilo. It was also win No. 277 of his career overall.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU remained perfect on the road (9-0) with an overtime 65-59 win at Hawai’i Hilo on Feb. 4. The win was their 16
th consecutive road victory (14
th straight conference road win) and 20
th consecutive win in Hawai’i. Maylinn Smith and Jallisa Butler each scored 14 points, while Butler grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.
ALOHA!: For the fourth consecutive season, the ‘Lopes went 4-0 on their Hawaiian road trip and improved to 27-1 overall when playing in Hawai’i. Additionally, GCU has now won 20 consecutive contests in Hawai’i. Their lone loss came at Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 18, 2008 (83-77). Overall since joining the conference, GCU is 49-5 against the Hawai’i teams with two games remaining this season against BYU-Hawai’i and Chaminade at home.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 9-0 on the road this season and have won 16 consecutive regular season road games (14 consecutive conference road games) dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.4 points-per-game away from home this season and since last season, are averaging 72.5 points-per-game on the road. Comparatively speaking, GCU is averaging 61.4 points-per-game at home this season.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 632-422 in the first half of their 19 regular season games and have scored at least 35 points in the first half nine times. The ‘Lopes scored a season-high-tying 45 first-half points on Dec. 9, 2011 vs. Cal State Stanislaus and Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points three times this season. The ‘Lopes have trailed at the half in only one of their games (Jan. 24 vs. HPU) and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: third with a 31.9 defensive field goal percentage and first with a 49.4 points-per-game-allowed; second with a 12.3 rebounding margin and ninth with an 89.5 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 91.6 free throw percentage ranks fifth.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 72.2 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 76.8 percent, while their 41.2 field goal percentage ranks third and their 31.9 three-point percentage ranks fourth. GCU leads the conference with an 12.3 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler leads the conference with a 63.9 field goal percentage and ranks second with 10.3 rebounds-per-game, while Maylinn Smith’s 16.2 points-per-game average is third.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 18 games this season, including a career-high 27 point performance at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1, a game in which she also recorded her first double-double of the season (11 rebounds).
