The No. 16 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated Cal Baptist, 67-56, in Riverside, Calif. The win improved the Antelopes’ overall record to 18-2, 10-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Lancers fell to 16-4 overall, 9-3 in the conference. GCU also improved to 10-0 on the road this season.
With the win, the ‘Lopes are now in sole possession of second place in the PacWest, just behind Dixie State who owns an 11-2 record in conference play.
The win was the 15th consecutive regular season PacWest road win and 17th straight regular season road victory for the ‘Lopes.
“When we came home after a long trip (to Hawai’i) and had to get on the road again, one of the things I challenged the girls with was the idea that we don’t have to go on this trip, we get to do this together,” said head coach Trent May.
Maylinn Smith led the team with 19 points, while
Joslynn Frazier had a season-high 12 points.
Jallisa Butler added 11 points.
“Maylinn is a great leader and she has tremendous poise,” said May. “She leads by example and has a great willingness. Joslynn is maturing and stepping up, which I like to see from a senior. I love the way she has matured on the floor and is playing so sound and confident. Life gives us adversity, but the girls understand that and they have continued to handle their responsibilities and do it together.”
Entering tonight’s game, GCU led all Division II schools with 49.4 points allowed per game as they limited the Lancers to their second-lowest scoring total of the season behind 55 points on Jan. 28 at Hilo. The 11-point margin of victory was the largest loss for Cal Baptist this season, as they had previously lost by nine points on No. 18, 2011 vs. Simon Fraser in Belmont, Calif., their first regular season game of the year.
“I’m so proud of the girls, especially on the defensive end and how they moved their feet tonight,” said head coach Trent May. “Our girls did a great job of really playing collectively on defense. They shared the ball well in the first half, which was strong enough to carry us through the game. It was hands down the best first half we have played all year. It was tremendous to watch.”
The ‘Lopes got off to a fast start as they took a 10-2 advantage into the first media timeout with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half and extended their lead to as many as 16 points. GCU held the Lancers scoreless for five minutes beginning with about 11 minutes to play in the first half as they went on a 6-0 run during that span to lead 26-10.
GCU used 50.0 percent (15-for-30) shooting from the field to take a 32-18 advantage into the locker room. The ‘Lopes also held the Lancers to a 5-for-25 mark (20.0 percent) from the floor in what was the sixth time this season GCU has held their opponent to 20 points or less in the first half.
Smith and Butler each had six points at the half, while Frazier,
Stevie Kamp and
Shelia Washington each added four points.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half until the Lancers used an 8-4 run with just over eight minutes remaining in the game to pull with nine points at 52-43 at the 6:55 mark.
“We feel like there is nothing our team can’t overcome,” said May. “Joslynn told me the other day that she believes each player individually is getting better, and that means we will get better as a team. We are capable of peaking at the right time and there is no better time than now.”
The ‘Lopes responded with a 5-0 run to extend their lead back to 14 points at 57-43 with five minutes to play. GCU put the game away when they pushed their lead to 63-48 with 1:25 left in the game.
“We have had games where we had leads and had to sustain them,” said May. “There is always going to be a run, you just have to weather it when it comes. I could not be more pleased with their resolve and togetherness. Players have really stepped up in different ways, and that helps with our team’s confidence. We have a first class group of young ladies.”
Smith scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second period.
The women will next be in action when they face off against Academy of Art on Monday, Feb. 13 in Phoenix. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. GCU will finish the season with five of their last six games coming at Grand Canyon University Arena.
“Every game in this conference is big because our program is big,” May added. “We are in a good situation, but we control our destiny.”
