VS. ACADEMY OF ART: GCU owns a 4-0 record against Pacific West Conference member Academy of Art. The ‘Lopes will be facing the Urban Knights for the first time this season. The two teams last met on Feb. 10, 2011 in Antelope Gym with GCU slating a 74-56 win.
RETURNING HOME: After a five-game road stint, GCU will play five of their final six regular season games at home, including three straight beginning on Feb. 13 vs. Academy of Art. The ‘Lopes hold an 8-2 record in GCU Arena.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU remained perfect on the road (10-0) with a 67-56 win at Cal Baptist on Feb. 11. The ‘Lopes held the Lancers to their second lowest scoring total of the season. Maylinn Smith scored 19 points and Cindy Ekweozor grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 10-0 on the road this season and have won 17 consecutive regular season road games (15 consecutive conference road games) dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.5 points-per-game away from home this season and since last season, are averaging 72.3 points-per-game on the road. Comparatively speaking, GCU is averaging 61.4 points-per-game at home this season.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 664-440 in the first half of their 20 regular season games and have scored at least 35 points in the first half nine times. The ‘Lopes scored a season-high-tying 45 first-half points on Dec. 9, 2011 vs. Cal State Stanislaus and Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points three times this season. The ‘Lopes have trailed at the half in only one of their games (Jan. 24 vs. HPU) and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: third with a 31.9 defensive field goal percentage and first with a 49.4 points-per-game-allowed; second with a 12.3 rebounding margin and ninth with an 89.5 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 91.6 free throw percentage ranks fifth.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 73.0 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 76.4 percent, while their 41.7 field goal percentage ranks second and their 31.1 three-point percentage ranks fourth. GCU leads the conference with an 11.7 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler leads the conference with a 65.2 field goal percentage and ranks second with 9.9 rebounds-per-game, while Maylinn Smith’s 16.3 points-per-game average is third.
ALOHA!: For the fourth consecutive season, the ‘Lopes went 4-0 on their Hawaiian road trip and improved to 27-1 overall when playing in Hawai’i. Additionally, GCU has now won 20 consecutive contests in Hawai’i. Their lone loss came at Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 18, 2008 (83-77). Overall since joining the conference, GCU is 49-5 against the Hawai’i teams with two games remaining this season against BYU-Hawai’i and Chaminade at home.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 19 games this season, including a career-high 27 point performance at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1, a game in which she also recorded her first double-double of the season (11 rebounds).
BUTLER’S IMPACT: Jallisa Butler has set career-highs in both rebounds and points this season with 19 boards on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State and 21 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. She has been named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week twice: for Dec. 5-11 and Jan. 16-22.
FRAZIER, MS. CONSISTENCY: Senior forward Joslynn Frazier has found her groove, scoring a season-best 12 points in GCU’s 67-56 victory over Cal Baptist on Feb. 11. She has 47 points in the last five games, averaging 9.4 points per game. Frazier has 139 points for the season (7.0 per game avg.) and has had double-digit points three times.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 10-1 during the stretch. Dating back to last season, GCU has won 15 consecutive regular season conference road games. Since joining the conference in 2006, the ‘Lopes have posted a 76-12 mark overall and have won 15 games three times: in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently 16
th in the poll.
