The Grand Canyon University women's basketball team, ranked 13th in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Preseason poll, will open their regular season with three games as part of the Disney Classic, beginning with Simon Fraser tonight at 9:30 p.m. (Arizona time). GAME NOTES
AT THE DISNEY CLASSIC: GCU last competed in the Disney Classic in 2010-11, where they posted a 2-1 record. The Antelopes defeated Texas Woman’s in the first game and UC San Diego in the third game (in a triple overtime thriller, 120-118) and fell to Alaska Anchorage in their second game.
IN THE POLLS: GCU is ranked 13
th in the
USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Preseason Coaches’ poll (updated Oct. 31). In the same poll, Ashland holds the top spot after finishing last season with a 33-2 record and falling to Shaw in overtime in the National Championship game. Additionally, UC San Diego is ranked eighth in the preseason poll (30-3 record in 2011-12).
LAST TIME OUT: GCU concluded their exhibition slate with an 81-55 loss at the University of Arizona on Monday. The ‘Lopes were led by Deanna Daniels and Cindy Ekweozor with eight points each, while Asha McDonnell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
PRESEASON PACWEST PREDICTIONS: GCU was picked to finish atop the PacWest standings after receiving 11 of 14 possible first place votes, as decided by conference coaches. Maylinn Smith, the reigning conference Player of the Year, was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
PACWEST CHAMPS!: GCU captured the outright PacWest crown with a win over Dixie State on March 3, 2012, their fifth in the last six seasons. GCU’s win over Cal Baptist on March 1, 2012 secured the PacWest’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
ON THE HONOR ROLL: Trent May was named 2011-12 PacWest Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his five seasons at the helm of GCU women’s basketball. Maylinn Smith was named PacWest Player of the Year, while Jallisa Butler garnered PacWest First-Team honors. Smith was also named to the
Daktronics Second-Team West Region.
POSTSEASON HISTORY: The GCU women have made six postseason appearances, including five in the NCAA (also competed in 1989 for NAIA). They competed in the NCAA tournament in 1997, 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Their best finish came in 2011 when they advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history before falling to Cal Poly Pomona in the West Region Finals. GCU is 3-5 in NCAA postseason play and have advanced past the first round twice.
QUICK STARTERS: The ‘Lopes outscored the opposition 945-650 in the first half of their 28 games last season and scored at least 35 points in the first half 12 times. The ‘Lopes trailed at the half in only two of their games last season.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: GCU finished 11-0 on the road in the regular season in 2011-12, the first time in school history they won each of their regular season games away from home. They have now won 18 consecutive regular season road games (16 straight conference road games) dating back to the 2010-11 season. GCU averaged 66.5 points-per-game on the road.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: GCU finished among the best in NCAA Division II in a number of categories last season: first with 50.3 points-per-game-allowed, second with an 11.2 rebounding margin, third with a 32.1 defensive field goal percentage, ninth with an 88.5 won-lost percentage and 10
th with a 15.3 scoring margin. Maylinn Smith’s 87.5 free throw percentage was 11
th.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams last season, GCU’s 41.7 field goal percentage and 33.4 three-point percentage was second to Hawai’i Pacific’s 43.2 and 35.3 percentages, while their 72.6 free throw percentage was third behind Notre Dame de Namur (73.5) and Hawai’i Hilo (72.4). GCU led the conference with an 11.2 rebounding margin.
