The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team fell to Simon Fraser, 69-60, in their first regular season game of the 2012-13 season as part of the Disney Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
GCU most recently faced The Clan last season, when they won back-to-back games on Dec. 18-19, 2011.
The Antelopes shot 39 percent (23-for-59) from the field and were hampered by a 0-for-9 mark from behind the arc. Simon Fraser made 23 of their 55 shot attempts (41.8 percent), including eight of 17 three-pointers (47.1 percent).
The ‘Lopes were led by
Jasmine Cannon and
Deanna Daniels with 13 points each, while
Asha McDonnell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Maylinn Smith also scored in double-digits for GCU, finishing with 12 points in the game.
The ‘Lopes got off to a quick 6-0 start as three different players scored in the first three minutes of the game. GCU did not allow a Simon Fraser basket until Erin Chambers drained a three-pointer with just over 16 minutes to play in the first and The Clan quickly notched the score at eight with 14 minutes left in the half. Simon Fraser took their first lead of the game at the 10-minute mark on a three-pointer that gave them a 13-12 advantage.
The Clan extended their lead to 26-19 at the 5:09 mark before Cannon scored two consecutive layups to cut the advantage to three points. The ‘Lopes made it a one-point game with one minute remaining and were able to keep Simon Fraser in reach as they trailed by just two, 29-27, at the half.
Judy Jones quickly notched the score at 29 within 15 seconds of the second half but Simon Fraser scored six unanswered points to take a 35-29 lead. The Clan took their largest lead of the game when they went ahead 12 points, 43-31, with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. The ‘Lopes cut the deficit to six points with four minutes to play and two Daniels free throws made it a four-point game, 54-50, with 3:41 on the clock.
Simon Fraser went on a 7-2 run over the next three minutes before Jones made a layup to make it a 61-54 game with 45 seconds to play. The two teams then traded baskets as The Clan held on for the nine-point win.
The ‘Lopes will continue the Disney Classic with their second game against No. 8 UC San Diego tomorrow at 2 p.m. (Arizona time). The Tritons fell to Gannon University in an earlier game today. Fans can follow the action live by visiting www.gculopes.com.
