VS. NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR: GCU owns a 12-4 record against divisional foe NDNU. The Argonauts handed the ‘Lopes their only loss of the season, 63-59, in both teams’ PacWest opener on Dec. 3 at GCU Arena. NDNU is 3-8 overall and owns a 1-2 mark in the conference.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: GCU will conclude their Northern California road trip when they face off against PacWest foe Notre Dame de Namur tomorrow. The ‘Lopes return to Grand Canyon University Arena on Jan. 11 for a matchup against Dominican but will play seven of their next 10 games away from home.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon evened their conference record with a convincing 62-34 win over Dominican last night at the Conlan Center in San Rafael, Calif. The 34 points allowed by GCU were their fewest this season and the ‘Lopes outrebounded their opponent, 55-29, for the ninth time. The ‘Lopes were led by Petrolina Chilaka and Angelina Dennison, who each scored a season-high 11 points. Jallisa Butler once again was dominant on the boards, grabbing 16 rebounds and chipping in with four points.

GETTING IT GOING: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 316-210 in the first half of their 10 regular season games. GCU allowed a season-low 13 first half points at Dominican on Jan. 3.
STAT SPEAK: GCU ranks fourth in the nation in scoring defense with 50.4 points-per-game. Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 75.6 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 81.9 percent, while their 41.3 shooting percentage from the field is the second-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s 41.8 percent. GCU leads the conference with a 35.0 success rate from behind the arc and a 13.1 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks second in the conference with a 60.3 field goal percentage and 10.3 rebounds-per-game. Nationally, Maylinn Smith’s 94.3 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in nine games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance in GCU’s 65-57 overtime win against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 15.4 points-per-game average is tied for second in the PacWest. Smith has been named to the PacWest Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll twice this season.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 10.3 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State. She was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently tied for 15
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 1-0 following their 62-34 win at Dominican on Jan. 3. The ‘Lopes fell to NDNU, 63-59, on Dec. 3 in the conference opener. GCU also lost their first conference game last season before winning 15 straight PacWest games en route to a Sweet 16 appearance.
