Grand Canyon split Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meets with Adams State and San Francisco State at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
GCU (12-4), ranked No. 5 in the Basford Poll and No. 7 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, dropped a 25-16 decision to Adams State, No. 14 in Basford and No. 9 in the NWCA. The Antelopes defeated San Francisco State, No. 20 in the NWCA, 25-10.
Bobby Ward (149),
Victor Carazo (174),
Brett Sanchez (184) and
Jordan Johnson (Hwt.) all won two matches.
“We were a little flat in the first dual, but give credit to Adams State, they took advantage of it,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “We knew going into that match there were three key duals and we lost two.
LaHaye was referring to matches for GCU’s Ward (149),
Kyle McCrite (125) and
Celic Bell (197).
Bell, ranked No. 7 by Basford, lost by fall to Luke McPeek, No.2 in the NWCA poll and No. 3 by Basford. Bell got the first take down, but McPeek was able to come back.
McCrite, No. 4 in the Basford Poll lost 5-4 to Jerry Huff, No. 4 in the NWCA poll. They were also No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Basford Regional Rankings.
Ward was very impressive in both of his wins Saturday, including a win by fall in 5:17 over Josh Hensley, a D-II All-American last year and ranked No. 4 in the NWCA and No. 3 in the Basford. Ward came in No. 7 in the Basford poll.
“I thought we rebounded well against San Francisco State,” said LaHaye.
The SFSU meet was the final home meet of the season and final home contest for the careers of Carazo, Johnson and
Ted Bristol (157). All three were victorious.
Bristol opened the match with a 7-5 win over Vicente Aboytes. Carazo, who picked up a 10-6 win over Jarod Purvis earlier in the day, dominated Arman Ostadsharif 11-3. Johnson beat Anthony Gonzalez 9-3 after taking a 7-4 decision over Taylor Stam of Adams State.
Sanchez was impressive in his wins, too. He defeated Darian Roberts of Adams State 15-5 to give GCU a temporary lead at 7-6. He edged Zach Jimenez in the night cap, 3-1.
Bell and McCrite both bounced back against the Gators. Bell was in control from start to finish in his victory over Thomas Martin, winning by technical fall 21-5 (6:43). McCrite answered his loss to Adams State with an 11-3 bonus-point win over Andy Yu.
The loss to Adams State halted GCU’s nine-match seasonal win streak and 10-match streak at Antelope Gym.
GCU will wrestle in the Texas Shootout next Saturday in Plainview, Tex. The Antelopes will take on Wayland Baptist, Ouachita Baptist and Newman.
