VS. DIXIE STATE: GCU owns a 7-5 record against divisional foe Dixie State. The teams last faced off on Feb. 5, 2011 in Phoenix in a 79-71 ‘Lopes victory. They last met in St. George on Jan. 8, 2011, where the Red Storm won 85-72. Dixie State is 9-4 overall and owns a 4-1 mark in the conference.
BACK AND FORTH: Following tomorrow’s game against Dixie State in St. George, the ‘Lopes will return home to face Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 19 and Hawai’i Pacific on Jan. 24. GCU will then play five straight road games from Jan. 28-Feb. 11, four of which will take place in Hawaii.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU won their seventh straight game, 71-29, on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican in their largest victory since a 69-point win over Chaminade on Jan. 27, 2010 (105-36). With the win, the ‘Lopes improved their overall record to 11-1 and their conference record to 3-1. GCU held their opposition to a season-low 29 points, their fewest allowed since an 85-20 win vs. Southwestern on Jan. 21, 2006. Their 42-point advantage was their largest since a 69-point victory over Chaminade on Jan. 27, 2010 (105-36).
Jallisa Butler and
Maylinn Smith led the offensive charge with 14 points each, while
Angelina Dennison and
Jenna Pearson chipped in with eight points. Butler grabbed 10 rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the season, while
Chigozie Ekweozor had eight rebounds and
Joslynn Frazier added 7 boards.
GETTING IT GOING: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 400-247 in the first half of their 12 regular season games. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points in both contests against Dominican on Jan. 3 in San Rafael, Calif., and Jan. 11 in Phoenix. The ‘Lopes have not trailed at the half in any of their games this season and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
ALL-AROUND EFFORT: The ‘Lopes have six players averaging at least five points as GCU ranks fourth in the PacWest Conference with 64.4 points-per-game.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: they rank first with a 30.9 defensive field goal percentage, second in scoring defense with 48.5 points-per-game; sixth with a 12.5 rebounding margin and 14
th with a 76.6 free-throw percentage.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 75.7 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 80.7 percent, while their 41.1 shooting percentage is the third-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s (42.8) and Cal Baptist’s (42.5). GCU leads the conference with a 36.6 success rate from behind the arc and a 13.5 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks second in the conference with a 59.2 field goal percentage and 10.3 rebounds-per-game. Nationally, Maylinn Smith’s 94.7 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 11 games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 15.4 points-per-game average is fourth in the PacWest.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 10.3 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State. She was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently 14
th in the poll.
