The No. 14 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team won, 65-49, tonight at Dixie State in St. George, Utah. The Antelopes improved to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in PacWest Conference play while Dixie State fell to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. With the win, the ‘Lopes snapped a 24-game home PacWest Conference winning streak for the Red Storm.
“You always want to play this game strong,” said head coach Trent May. “I was really proud of the girls for getting off to a really great start tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of the way our girls prepared and of our coaching staff. I have phenomenal assistant coaches and I’m very blessed to have a staff who gives so much of their time and effort. I couldn’t be more proud of the game tonight because we know we beat a good team on their court. Our players really stepped up tonight.”
Entering tonight’s game, the ‘Lopes led all NCAA Division II schools with a 30.9 defensive field goal percentage, while their 48.5 points-allowed-per-game ranked second. The ‘Lopes held the Red Storm to a 23.9 shooting percentage (16-for-67) and forced 17 turnovers, 12 of which came via a steal. With a margin of 54-45, GCU outrebounded their opponent for the 12
th time and are 11-1 in those contests.
“Mainly what we did tonight was think about how we wanted to play,” said
Jallisa Butler. “It was a feeling we all had that we were going to win. We have a lot of confidence as a team and we knew we had to go out there and play hard. We wanted to use the first 10 minutes to set the tempo of the game. We wanted to go out there and have fun.”
The ‘Lopes shot 37.5 percent from the field (24-for-64) and made 16 of their 25 free throws (64 percent). Butler posted her fifth double-double of the season, having scored 10 points and grabbing 13 boards in the first half alone and finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds.
“With me, it’s patience,” added Butler. “I don’t look to score all the time, but when the opportunity is there, I go for it. And with rebounding, I have a certain way that I go in to rebound. I have a lot of confidence in that and I feel like no one can outrebound me. I take a lot of pride in that.”
Maylinn Smith led GCU with 18 points and shot 91.0 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-11).
Joslynn Frazier added 10 rebounds and
Angelina Dennison scored a season-high-tying 11 points in the game.
“Jallisa is a gamer and she is a monster on the boards,” May said. “She had 18 rebounds in a really big game tonight. Every possession in this game was crucial and she gets us rebounds and is great in the post. Hats off to her for the double-double tonight and overall a great job on her part.”
Dixie State scored the first two points of the contest with just under 19 minutes left and led until the ‘Lopes used a 6-0 run to take a 9-6 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish, with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The ‘Lopes held the Red Storm scoreless over six minutes of the half over which they had a 12-0 run led by Butler’s six points. Smith, Dennison and Frazier each added two points during the stretch. Dixie State shot just 16.1 percent in the first half en route to scoring 13 points, the third time this season and second consecutive time the ‘Lopes have held their opposition to that season-low number.
Dixie State outscored the ‘Lopes 36-33 in the second half, as they made four of their five three-pointers in the period and improved their shooting percentage to 30.6 (11-for-36). The Red Storm used a 19-4 run at the 10-minute mark to pull within six points of the ‘Lopes, 51-45, until just under four minutes were remaining. That would be the closest Dixie State would come in the game. GCU closed out the game with a 14-4 run to secure the win.
“You know that run is going to come, but you hope that it doesn’t,” added May. “But you have to be aware of that possibility. Everybody got pretty anxious in the second half and it’s so important to be able to do the little things well. Especially all throughout the game, because little things turn into big things. We took a couple of quick shots midway through the second half and that’s not how we got the lead in the first place. We needed to make sure we were taking good shots, looking inside and rebounding and we were able to do that at the end.”
GCU will next be in action when they return home to GCU Arena to take on Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 19. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
