VS. HAWAI’I HILO: GCU owns an 11-1 record against Hawai’i Hilo. The teams last faced off on Feb. 26, 2011 in Hilo in a 77-48 ‘Lopes victory. The ‘Lopes have won the last eight contests dating back to the 2007-08 season. Hawai’i Hilo is 7-6 overall and owns a 4-1 mark in the conference.
BACK AT HOME: The ‘Lopes return home to face Hawai’i Hilo tomorrow and Hawai’i Pacific on Jan. 24. GCU will then play five straight road games from Jan. 28-Feb. 11, four of which will take place in Hawai’i. GCU will then return home for three straight at GCU Arena.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU won their eighth straight game, 65-49, on Jan. 16 at Dixie State to snap the Red Storm’s streak of 24 consecutive PacWest home victories. With the win, the ‘Lopes improved their overall record to 12-1 and their conference record to 4-1. For the second consecutive game, the ‘Lopes held their opposition to a season-low-tying 13 first-half points.
Jallisa Butler posted her fifth double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds, while Maylinn Smith led the offensive charge with 18 points. Angelina Dennison had a season-high-tying 11 points and Joslynn Frazier added 10 boards. GCU outrebounded (54-45) their opponent for the 12
th time and are 11-1 in those games.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 5-0 on the road this season and have won 12 consecutive regular season road games dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.4 points-per-game away from home.
GETTING IT GOING: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 432-260 in the first half of their 13 regular season games. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points in both contests against Dominican and on Jan. 16 at Dixie State. The ‘Lopes have not trailed at the half in any of their games this season and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
ALL-AROUND EFFORT: The ‘Lopes have six players averaging at least five points as GCU ranks fifth in the PacWest Conference with 64.5 points-per-game.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: they rank first with a 30.2 defensive field goal percentage and in scoring defense with 46.9 points-per-game; third with a 13.5 rebounding margin and 12
th with a 91.7 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 94.7 free throw percentage ranks second.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 74.5 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 80.7 percent, while their 40.8 shooting percentage is the third-best mark behind Hawai’i Pacific’s (42.7) and Cal Baptist’s (42.5). GCU leads the conference with a 36.0 success rate from behind the arc and a 13.2 rebounding margin. Jallisa Butler leads the conference with 10.9 rebounds-per-game and ranks second with a 59.8 field goal percentage.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 12 games this season, including a career-high 22 point performance against Simon Fraser on Dec. 19. Her 15.6 points-per-game average is third in the PacWest.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team and ranks first with a 10.9 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State. She was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for Dec. 5-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently tied for 12
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 4-0 during the stretch. The ‘Lopes have 6 road and 7 home games remaining. Dating back to last season, GCU has won 10 consecutive regular season conference road games.
