Nationally-Ranked GCU Heads Back To The Mat

Nationally-ranked Grand Canyon heads back to the mat today in Prescott, Ariz. as part of the Mile High Duals hosted by Embry-Riddle.
The Antelopes, No. 5 in the Basford Division II Rankings and No. 7 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, will take on Menlo at 3 p.m. and Montana State-Northern at 4:30 p.m.
GCU is 8-3 in dual meets and have won six straight. Its only losses are to Division I Arizona State and Division II’s top two NWCA ranked teams, No. 1 St. Cloud State and No. 2 Newberry.
Montana State-Northern is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. Menlo is the first team receiving votes outside the NAIA’s Top 20.
GCU has two wrestlers in the NWCA rankings. Two-time All-American Victor Carazo is No. 5 at 174 and Division I transfer Jordan Johnson is No. 8 at 285. The Antelopes have five wrestlers among the Top 8 in the Basford Poll. Carazo is No. 2 and Johnson is No. 5. Kyle McCrite is No. 4 at 125; Bobby Ward is No. 7 at 149 and Celic Bell is No. 7 at 197.
Friday’s matches are the first since GCU wrapped up a nine-match in eight-day stretch with three impressive wins at Antelope Gymnasium. The ’Lopes edged National Collegiate Wrestling Association No. 1 California Baptist 22-21 and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Western State, 19-18, to go with an impressive 32-6 win over then-No. 22 Colorado State University-Pueblo, another RMAC rival. GCU is 3-0 in conference matches.
GCU returns to Antelope Gym Jan. 21 for a 7 p.m. contest with Great Falls, the top-ranked NAIA team.
