Sophomore midfielder/forward Andrea Aguirre and junior forward KaUa Wall scored goals to lead first-place Hawai'i Pacific University to a 2-0 victory over Grand Canyon University in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer match today at Atherton Stadium in Kaneohe, Hawai'i.
The Antelopes' five-match unbeaten streak came to an end. They now are 3-4-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Warriors, who are tied for No. 10 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II West Region rankings, are 6-1-1, 4-0-1.
GCU played without its head coach, Stevie Gill, and one of its starters, sophomore midfielder
Jessica Scarpati (Las Vegas, NV, Shadow Ridge). Both were suspended after being shown red cards in last Saturday's scoreless, double-overtime draw at BYU-Hawai'i (4-0-1, 1-0-1), the team with which Hawai'i Pacific is tied for No. 10 in the West Region rankings.
Gill was suspended for one match, Scarpati two.
Aguirre scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute when 'Lopes senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol, Washington State University) came out of the box to defend senior defender Jacqueline Ho. Ho passed the ball to Aguirre, who put it in the back of the net.
Wall scored an unassisted goal off a rebound in the 47th minute.
GCU had a 21-13 advantage in shots and a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. Seven of the shots on goal were by junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun), the 2010 PacWest Player of the Year, and senior forward
Jessica Brillantes (Anaheim, CA, Loara, Santiago Canyon College).
The 'Lopes had seven corner kicks; the Sea Warriors had none.
Twenty-one fouls were called, 11 of which were on the visitors.
Phillips was replaced in the second half by sophomore
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ, Salpointe Catholic), who recorded six saves. Phillips took the loss.
HPU senior goalkeeper Carianne Makino played the full 90 minutes and made 12 saves.
GCU will play the final match of its four-game Hawai'ian trip on Saturday, when it faces Hawai'i Hilo at 3:30 p.m. Arizona time at Amaaulu Field on the big island.
