Junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun), the 2010 Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, had a hat trick to lead the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Hawai'i Hilo in a PacWest match today at Amaaulu Field in Hilo, Hawai'i.
The Antelopes, whose five-match unbeaten streak was snapped by Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday in Honolulu, improved to 4-4-2 overall, 3-1-1 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 2-4-1, 2-3-1.
Nesic now has seven goals this season, one fewer than conference leader Kylee Nicassio of Cal Baptist and the same number as another Cal Baptist player, Kimberly Allard.
Nesic got GCU on the scoreboard first in the fifth minute off of an assist by senior forward/defender
Julia Anglin (Goodyear, AZ, Desert Edge, Scottsdale Community College), and then scored her second goal in the 18th minute on a penalty kick.
Nesic's fellow Serbian, junior defender
Milica Mihajlovic (Novi Sad, Serbia, Chemistry School , University of Texas at Brownsville), made the score 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute.
Sophomore forward/midfielder
Danielle De La Vina (Gilbert, AZ, Mesquite, New Mexico
State) made it 4-0 in the 37th minute off of Nesic's second assist of the season. It was De La Vina's first goal as a 'Lope after scoring three goals and having three assists as a freshman last year at Division-I New Mexico State University.
Hawai'i Hilo sophomore forward Lindsey Poulsen received a ball from freshman forward Brianne Lopiccolo and scored in the 57th minute, and a minute later the score became 4-2 on an own goal.
Nesic capped the scoring in the 65th minute on another penalty kick.
GCU took 16 shots in the match, 10 of which were on frame. Hawai'i Hilo had five shots, four of which were on goal.
The Vulcans had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Thirty-one fouls were called, 17 of them on the home team.
Four yellow cards were shown, two to each side.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ, Salpointe Catholic) made her fourth start of the season for the 'Lopes. She did not allow a goal, recorded one save and got her third win. She was replaced in the second half by senior
Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ , Corona Del Sol, Washington State University), who also made one save.
GCU completed its four-match trip to Hawai'i with a 2-1-1 record. Its next match is against Dominican University (3-5-0, 1-3-0) at 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
