Four GCU Student-Athletes Named PacWest Scholar Athletes of the Year

For their outstanding effort in the classroom and in the arena of athletic competition, four Grand Canyon University student-athletes -- Jacob Golembiewski (men's golf), Kyle Ciliento (men's soccer), Samantha Murphy (women's basketball) and Montana Lucas (softball) -- have been named 2010-11 Pacific West Conference Scholar Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. They now will be placed on the ballot for 2010-11 PacWest Men's and Women's Scholar Athletes of the Year.
The PacWest made the announcements on Saturday from its media office in Phoenix.
Jacob Golembiewski (Chandler, AZ, Corona del Sol, Cal State Fullerton), a business administration
major, had a 3.935 GPA. The senior was named 2011 PacWest Men's Golf Newcomer of the Year and First-Team All-PacWest after tying for seventh place at the PacWest Championship in St. George, Utah. He finished the season ranked 26th in the West Region with a 74-stroke average, and earned a medal at the GCU Thunderbirds Spring Invite.
Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle, Saint Mary’s College of California), also a business administration major, had a 3.96 GPA and was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Men's Soccer Third Team. The sophomore led the Antelopes to the 2010 PacWest championship, their fourth in the five-year history of men's soccer in the conference, and was named PacWest Men's Soccer Player of the Year. He ranked first in the nation in total goals (27), goals per game (1.35) and points per game (3.0), and second in total points (60). He was named the Daktronics NCAA Division II West Region Men's Soccer Player of the Year. In addition, he was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Soccer All-America First Team and to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Performance Subaru NCAA Men's Division II All-America First Team

Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep), a pre-physical therapy major, had a 3.97 GPA. The senior was named National Payer of the Year by Daktronics and the Division II Bulletin, as well as CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-America. She led the nation in scoring and free-throw shooting, and was selected First-Team All-PacWest for the fourth consecutive year and PacWest Player of the Year for the second straight season. She twice has was named PacWest Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and PacWest Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year. She also was named Athlete of the Year by the Phoenix Women's Sports Association and PacWest Female Athlete of the Year in 2010-11.
Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ, Cactus HS (Phoenix College)), a criminal justice major, had a 3.7 GPA.
The senior was named to the 2011 Daktronics Division II All-West Region Second Team and to the First Team as a utility player. She led GCU in RBI (43); was second on the team in home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.549); tied for second in doubles (10); and finished third in runs (27), hits (47) and total bases (78). She started all 41 games played and posted a .342 on-base percentage with 84 putouts, 53 assists and a .932 fielding percentage.
The PacWest's sports information directors nominate and vote on the PacWest Scholar Athlete of the Year awards. The same group will vote this week on the overall PacWest Men's and Women's Scholar Athletes of the Year.
