The Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team closed out the 2011 season in fine fashion today, defeating Hawai’i Hilo, 6-3, at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park, Calif.
The win closes a successful season for the ‘Lopes, finishing with an 11-7 record.
“The team finished on a great note,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “I'm proud of the guys for bouncing back so quickly after yesterday's tough loss. We finished at 7 p.m. last night and were back on the court at 8:30 a.m. this morning. Furthermore, it’s not always easy to beat a good team three times, but they set the tone in doubles by withstanding a fight from Hilo and earning the 2-1 lead. We closed out four of the singles and only dropped two, close three-setters.”
GCU also defeated the Vulcans, 7-2, on Feb. 9 in Glendale, Ariz. and again on March 25, 8-1, in Hilo Hawai’i.
Schoelzel, Murray and
Kevin Anderson all won in straight sets in their singles matches. Herbert won his singles match in three sets, winning at love in the final set.
The program has progressed from zero wins in 2009, four in 2010, to 11 wins this season and a winning record.
“Having our first winning record with the men's season is one more accomplishment to add to our long list this season, but the guys want more,” added Prudhomme. “We will enjoy these accomplishments, but learn from the season's events and keep improving.”
