The Grand Canyon University baseball team closed out PacWest Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Dixie State today at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. GCU won the opener 7-4 in 12 innings, before dropping the nightcap, 6-1.
The Antelopes’ overall record now stands at 21-23, while they close out conference play with a 16-16 record.
The ‘Lopes needed to work overtime in game one, playing 12 innings in just less than four hours.
Tyler Bair started the 12
th inning with a single and moved to third on a pair of stolen bases. With one out,
Colin Courtland hit a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Antelopes a 5-4 lead.
Joe Jacobson would later score on a bases loaded wild pitch and
Tyler Kamtz walked with the bases loaded to give GCU a 7-4 edge.
Courtland (3-3) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed two hits, fanning three, while walking one.
After falling behind 2-0, GCU tied the game in the fifth on a RBI single by
Kalab Evans and RBI ground out by Courtland. They would take the lead in the eighth, 4-3.
Mike Kenneth, who finished the game with three hits, doubled to start a two-out rally.
Joey Bristyan followed Kenneth with a RBI single and would later score on a single by
R.J. Etchebarren.
Grand Canyon finished the game with 20 hits, with Etchebarren collecting four.
David Wydeven started and allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 7.2 innings.
GCU left 23 runners on base during the game, while the Red Storm stranded 17.
Like yesterday, the ‘Lopes used a seventh inning home run to avoid being shutout in the nightcap.
Dixie State wasted little time in jumping out to a 2-0 lead after one, 3-0 lead after two and 6-0 lead after four innings.
GCU was held to three hits and scored their only run on a two-out seventh inning home run by Evans. It was his second home run of the season.
Kenneth and Etchebarren each had a hit in game two.
Coltin White (6-4) started and took the loss for GCU. He allowed three runs on six hits over 2.2 innings.
Grand Canyon will close out the 2011 season with a three-game set next weekend against Cal State East Bay at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. The teams will play on Friday, April 29 beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. GCU will honor its senior class prior the start of Sunday’s game.
