The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team continued its five-game winning streak today by defeating the D-I Weber State University, 5-4, in Glendale.
The Antelopes, ranked No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, started out strong by winning two of three doubles matches. The No. 3 doubles team, Marie Vanlerenberghe (Hazebrouck, France, Lycee des Flandres HS) and Kaila Knopf (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle HS), defeated Kristi Russell and Annika Karlsen 9-7.
In singles, the ‘Lopes won three of the six matched played. GCU’s No. 4 player, Vanlerenberg, defeated Karlsen 6-3, 6-1. Its No. 5 player, Frederique Van de Velde (Kapelle, Belgium, Regionale Scholengemeenschaap) beat Russell 6-4, 6-4. Finally, The Antelopes’ No. 6 player, Chloe Cornille (Paris, France, Rene Descartes HS, University Paris Val de Marne), defeated Phonarath 6-3, 5-7, 10-2.
The Wildcats, a member of Division I Big Sky conference, have won two straight conference matches after beating Easter Washington, 5-2, on Feb. 20. After today’s match they fell to 3-2 overall but stayed 2-0 in the conference.
‘Lopes improved to 7-1 on the season. They are currently in second place in the PacWest behind BYU Hawai’i (5-0) and just ahead of Hawai’i Pacific (8-2).
“It was a very close match,” said Head Coach Greg Prudhomme. “The girls fought for every match we won. We are very excited to get a win against an NCAA DI team that is undefeated in the Big Sky Conference. This is the first DI win in many years for the GCU women's tennis program. The girls were playing with confidence and happy to back up their top 20 DII ranking.”
GCU will continue next against Southwest Minnesota State at 12:00 p.m. on March 8 in Glendale, Ariz.
