Women's Tennis Sweeps Southwest Minnesota State

The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team swept Southwest Minnesota State, 9-0, today at the Paseo Raquet Center in Glendale.
The Antelopes, ranked No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, now have a six-game winning streak. They played without their No. 1 player, Katharina Mittag (Hamburg, Germany, Rangitoto College, Temple University), who was ill, but their other players moved up a spot and beat the Mustangs.
GCU's No. 1 doubles team, Cecilia Vergnet (La Colle sur Loup, France, Academy of Nice, University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis) and Frederique Van de Velde (Kapelle, Belgium, Regionale Scholengemeenschaap), defeated Cailey Grupe and Trisha Baldwin, 8-3. Its No. 2 doubles team, Stephanie Haldeman (Peoria, AZ, Centennial HS) and Marie Vanlerenberghe (Hazebrouck, France, Lycee des Flandres HS), beat Angie Wiegmann and Kasey Uran, 8-3. Its No. 3 doubles team, Kaila Knopf (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle HS) and Pauline Emin (Viry, France, Lycee Arbez Carme HS) defeated Kelsey Bourne and Mattison Peters, 8-0.
In singles, the ‘Lopes dominated in all six matches. GCU improved to 8-1 on the season and is in second place in the Pacific West Conference behind BYU Hawai’i (9-0) and just ahead of Hawai’i Pacific (8-2).
Southwest Minnesota State, a member of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, lost its fifth consecutive road game and fell to 2-8 overall, 2-3 in conference.
“The girls played very well today,” said Head Coach Greg Prudhomme. “We played without our No. 1 player, Katharina Mittag, who was ill, but still showed how much depth we have this year because girls could all move up a spot and still get a strong win.”
GCU next plays against Azusa Pacific at 1:30 p.m. on March 11 in Los Angeles.
