The Grand Canyon women’s tennis team continued their strong play today, defeating Sonoma State, 8-1, at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park, Calif.
The women, ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 3 in the west region, have dropped only two games in their last three matches and have won four in a row.
Today’s win improved GCU’s overall record to 12-2. Sonoma State, ranked No. 6 in the west region, fell to 7-4.
"Today's match was one of the best performances the team has had this season," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We beat a tough team by staying very mentally tough from the beginning of the day until the end. This win says a lot about the girls, having played the day before at home, traveling last night, enduring a two and a half hour rain delay after warm-ups, and then winning on the road by a strong score. I'm very proud of them."
Mittag, playing No. 1 singles, won a three-set battle with Sonoma’s Dana Carollo. Mittag dropped the first set before rallying to win the final two and secure the point.
Vergnet dominated at No. 2 singles, besting Anastasia Eliseeva, 6-0, 6-2.
GCU would win the last four singles matches in straight sets.
The women will now head to San Francisco for a match tomorrow with Notre Dame de Namur. They will complete their six matches in six days trek with meetings with Academy of Arts on March 19 and Dominican on March 20, both in San Francisco.
