GCU Tennis Teams Rout Mesa State

The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams cruised to victory for the second straight day this afternoon at the Paseo Raquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The men, ranked No. 4 in the west region, defeated Mesa State today, 8-1, a day after a 9-0 win over Roger Williams.
The women, ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 3 in the west region, also won 8-1 over Mesa State, a day after blanking Roger Williams 9-0.
Both of Mesa State’s teams are ranked No. 4 in the central region.
“The men and women had strong wins this afternoon,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “It was another first for the men's tennis program as we have never defeated Mesa State. We knew we were getting close after losing 5-4 last year, so it was nice to win so decisively today. This will give both programs momentum as we leave town today with the women and then next week with the men for some very competitive road matches.”
The men’s No. 1 doubles team of Frederic Schoelzel and Stephane Murray won their match 8-0, while the No. 2 doubles team of Ahmad Saleem and Patrice Giraldi picked up an 8-3 win, to give the ‘Lopes the 2-1 lead.
GCU captured all six singles matches, highlighted by No. 1 Schoelzel and No. 4 Giraldi’s 6-0, 6-0 wins.
The men have now won two-straight matches and improved their record to 7-5 overall.
The women swept the doubles match to open an early 3-0 advantage.
The win improves the women’s overall record to 11-2.
The women are back in action tomorrow for the third match in their six matches in six days portion of their schedule. They will visit Sonoma State in Rohnert Park Calif. tomorrow.
The men are off until March 22, when they will host Connecticut College at the Paseo Racquet Center at 12:00 p.m.
