GCU Defeats NYU; Tarantino Sets New Record

The ‘Lopes knew they had to be prepared to play against the Violets.
GCU was down, 0-1, after the first set and had to battle back to win the second, 25-21. NYU went on to win the third set, 25-21, and the ‘Lopes took the fourth, 25-21. GCU won the fifth set, 15-11, to take the match.
Sophomore Tarantino had an impressive night .
"Jordon played extremely well," Head Coach Jeremy Price said. "No one could stop him.”
Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) and Ben Hunt (Huntington Beach, CA , Servite) had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior middle Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) hit .556 with six kills on nine attempts. Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) had 21 digs and now has 214 for the season.
Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) was back in the lineup and recorded 52 assists, seven digs and one block assist.
“Keith did a great job running the offense and it showed how effective we were with a sideout percentage of 71,” Price said.
GCU has won three straight matches and has a week off before hosting Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on March 10 at 6 p.m.
