Men's and Women's Teams Thump Hawai'i Hilo on First Day of GCU Tennis Invitational

The men's team did it again. In only the second match of the season, it acheived another "first" by defeating Hawai'i Hilo by a score of 7-2. It also marks the first time the new GCU men's tennis program has beaten a team from its tough West Region.

The team did great today. If we are going to be a nationally recognized team, we need to be able to get wins like we did today. We have stronger teams to play that we want to be successful against very soon, but today was a good test; when we beat NAU last weekend we were playing with less pressure since we were playing up a division. However, today we were playing a D-II team from our region. We got off to a good start by winning two out of the three doubles. The guys turned that momentum into five out of the six singles wins.

3. Quijano/Mizuguchi, Hilo, defeated Anderson/Will Herbert, GCU, 8-6

Women

The GCU women's tennis team got its season off to a great start by beating fellow PacWest school Hawai'i Hilo by a strong 8-1 score. It's always a great win when we can beat Hilo. It's always been a tough team. The six new players and three returning players (representing four different countries) for GCU did a great job of playing as a team. The girls played their doubles with so much chemistry and they were all fighting equally hard for their singles wins. I couldn't have asked for a better start for the season. We have many tough matches ahead, but I expect our girls to compete with any team we're up against.
