GCU looks to break the school record for wins in a season when it takes on Hawai’i-Hilo at UHH Gymnasium in Hilo Saturday.
GCU has won 11 straight games and is 23-2 on the season. The 2006-07 team finished 23-4.
Grand Canyon is ranked No. 9 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and No. 3 in the NCAA West Region.
More importantly, the Antelopes want to stay at the top of the Pacific West Conference standings. GCU and No. 12 Dixie State are both 11-1 in conference games. The conference champion gets an automatic bid into the NCAA West Region.
Both GCU and Dixie State play their final four games on the road in Hawai’i. Dixie State is at BYU-Hawai’i Saturday. GCU has won three of the last four conference championships and went to the NCAA West Region in 2009.
“We have four games left and this is the first one for our opportunity to win a conference championship,” said head coach Trent May on Saturday’s contest at Hawai’i-Hilo. “We have to continue the ‘Lope way – which is to have great focus and great preparation.”
A win will give May his second single-season victory record. Prior to coming to GCU, May led Bethany College, an NAIA school in Kansas, to a school-record 30-3 season.
GCU senior standouts
