Grand Canyon set a new school record for wins in a season (24) with a 77-48 victory over Hawaii-Hilo at UHH Gymnasium Saturday.
Ranked No. 9 in the nation and No. 3 in the West Region, GCU improved to 24-2 overall and 12-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
Samantha Murphy went over the 2,000-point mark for her career and
Rosalyn Nelson eclipsed the 1,500-point plateau. Murphy, the leading scorer in all of NCAA Division II, had a game-high 20 points. Nelson had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Maylinn Smith added 11 and
Katie Johnson scored 10.
Jallisa Butler had eight points and eight rebounds.
GCU committed only seven turnovers.
“The first one (of four games in Hawai’i) can always be a bear,” said GCU coach Trent May. “I’m proud of our girls. It was business as usual for us. We had good energy.
It marked the second time May has led a program to a school-record win total. Prior to coming to GCU, he led NAIA Bethany College (Kan.) to a 30-3 record in 2002-03.
GCU began pulling away in the first half. Tied at 16-16, the Antelopes went on a 15-0 run to lead 31-16. Included in the run was a three-possession, nine-point outburst. Freshmen Smith and
Jenna Pearson each hit 3-pointers and
Joslynn Frazier added a conventional three-point play.
“Hilo is a team that will battle you,” added May. “We stayed grounded. It was a good solid game for the girls tonight.”
Two Nelson free throws and a lay-in started the 15-0 run. The lay-in accounted for her 1,500th point. Murphy, who leads the nation in free-throw shooting (91.3), got her 2,000th point on two free throws at the 4:26 mark of the first half to give GCU a 34-21 lead.
Last season, at Hilo, Murphy became the program’s all-time leading scorer.
“It was a big goal of mine coming into the season,” said Murphy of reaching 2,000 points.
“This was a good win and I think it helps us settle in (to the road trip),” added Murphy, who has 2,015 points for her career. “I think we know what we’re capable of and we’re capable of going 4-0. We have to take one team at a time and each game is as important as the next.”
Grand Canyon takes on Chaminade Monday at 5:30 p.m.
