Grand Canyon extended its winning streak to 13 games and remained in first place in the Pacific West Conference with an 88-48 victory over Chaminade at McCabe Gym in Honolulu Monday.
GCU’s
Samantha Murphy led the way with 24 points and tied her career-high with eight steals.
Rosalyn Nelson had 18 points and five steals.
Maylinn Smith had 14 points.
"We had an uneasy start to the game, but once we settled down we started doing things that were more familiar to us," said GCU coach Trent May. "We went on quite a big run starting with the middle of the first half."
Grand Canyon, ranked No. 9 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and No. 3 in the NCAA West Region, improved to 25-2 overall – increasing its school-record for wins in a season -- and 13-1 in the PacWest. With Dixie State's 53-50 loss at Hawai'i Pacific, GCU is in first place by itself.
“We picked up our energy,” said Nelson of the final 20 minutes that saw GCU outscore Chaminade 56-23. “We came out sluggish, but were able to pick up the intensity (in the second half),”
Chaminade hit nine of its first 13 shots and led 21-14, before GCU went on a 14-0 run. Chaminade went 7:26 without a field goal.
“We settled down on offense and started getting more aggressive in our press,” said Murphy. “They shocked us and came out super hot. We weren’t ready and that’s not good. I’m proud of the way we finished.”
Junior
Joslynn Frazier had a team-high six rebounds. In only five minutes,
Kayla Fisher tied for a team-high in assists with three. Nelson and Murphy each had three assists.
Kristi Girdley added four steals.
"We were trying to open a locked door instead of finding an easier route," said May of his club's first half. "Our team can do things and have different contributors and be successful. We're not one dimensional.
"I'm pleased with our resolve and figuring out what to do and get it done."
GCU will play at BYU-Hawai’i Wednesday.
