'Lopes Drop 1-3 Decision to Lions

The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped a 1-3 decision to Lindenwood University tonight in Antelope Gymnasium.
Both teams started strong in the first set before Lindenwood was able to pull out a 19-25 victory over the ‘Lopes. It was a one point game, with the teams going back and forth each point. The set was tied at 7-7 before the Lions pulled ahead 7-8 and would hold the lead the rest of the set. Jake Wekell (Tempe, AZ, Marcos de Niza) led the offense on the outside with five kills and Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) held down the defense with three digs.
Grand Canyon dominated the second set to win 25-18. The ‘Lopes hit .619 with 13 kills and zero errors. GCU held the lead the entire set and never allowed the Lions to even tie the score once they took the lead for the final time. Jordon Tarantino (Valley Center, CA , Valley Center , Palomar Community College) stepped up in the middle with four kills and one block assists. Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) had three kills, three digs and one block assist.
Again both teams came out ready to play in the third set battling for a win. There were 11 lead changes and 18 tie scores before the Lindenwood Lions came out with a 22-25 win. Grand Canyon was in the lead at 22-20 when Lindenwood went on a five point run to win the set. The two teams were close in statistical performance. The Lions hit .240 (12 kills, 6 errors) for the set while the ‘Lopes hit .200 (13 kills, 7 errors). Ponnet had four kills while Bruns had four digs.
The fourth set belonged to Lindenwood as they held control the entire game beating the ‘Lopes 18-25 and winning the match 1-3. Ponnet had two kills, two digs, and one block solo for the set. Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) and Tyler Capko (Las Vegas, NV, Palo Verde) each had three kills.
This is Lindenwood’s 10th straight win.
Ponnet ended the match with 11 kills and Wekell contributed 10. Sophomore setter Brad Moore (Orange, CA, Orange Lutheran) slated 40 assists and Bruns finished with 10 digs for the night.
