The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Cal State L.A. in the first game of a four-game series this afternoon at Reeder Field in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Golden Eagles (3-2) overcame a 4-2 deficit, scoring three times with two outs in the sixth inning.
GCU (2-2) had opportunities to tie the game up, placing runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings and putting the tying runner on in the ninth.
The ‘Lopes finished the game with 10 runners left on base.
The Antelopes started fast, taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by
Colin Courtland in the first. They extended the lead to 3-0 in the third, scoring on an error by Golden Eagles’ first baseman Nick Rodarte and a fielder’s choice by
Danne Quiroz.
On the mound,
Brady Wager took the loss in his second start of the season. He started quickly allowing only two baserunners over the first three innings, before being touched for five runs (four earned) on four hits over his final 1.2 innings.
Cody Repenning once again pitched a solid game out of the pen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings.
Ernesto Ortiz had his second straight multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double, and has hit safely in all four games this season. Freshman
Jackie Samora went 2-for-4 today, and has also hit safely in all four games this season. The two have hit in the eight-nine spots in the order through the first four games and are hitting a combined .520 (13-for-25).
The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. (AZ Time) at Reeder Field.
Notes –Colin Courtland extended his hitting streak to 14 games (dating back to 2010)…GCU tied a season with 11 hits today…they committed three errors in a game for the third time this season… GCU had a season-high three doubles in the game.
