The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader today, 8-2 and 4-2, to Cal State L.A. at Reeder Field in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Golden Eagles jumped out quickly in the opener, scoring two runs on four hits to lead 2-0 after the first inning.
Starter
Justin McKee (0-2) settled down after the first, retiring 13-straight batters through the fifth inning.
McKee ran into trouble in the sixth, surrendering three runs on four hits. The inning started with a double by Golden Eagles’ leadoff hitter Daniel Duran on a ball that was lost in the sun by right fielder
Tyler Bair. After a sacrifice fly, Chad Nacapoy singled home Duran to increase the lead to 3-1. Brian Moon followed with a home run to center to put the Golden Eagles in front 5-1.
GCU was led offensively by
Joe Jacobson who recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4.
The second game of the doubleheader had the same feel as the opener, with Cal State L.A. (5-2) jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
The Antelopes would threaten throughout, placing runners on-base every inning, but were unable to capitalize.
The ‘Lopes loaded the bases in the third on two outs, but Jacobson fanned to end the threat.
GCU (2-4) closed the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth, but were unable to do anymore damage, despite recording three hits in the frame.
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, Bair drove a 1-2 offering over the right field fence to account for the final scoring.
Colin Courtland made his first start of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings.
The two teams will close out the series with a game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (AZ Time). The Antelopes will return home for four games with Northwest Nazarene from Feb. 18-19.
