The 17
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team will travel to San Francisco to take on Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday as part of the PacWest/CCAA Challenge. Both games are slated to start at 5:30 p.m. Arizona time.
This weekend’s contests open a stretch of four non-conference games for the ‘Lopes before resuming their PacWest conference schedule on Jan. 3 at Dominican. GCU will host Simon Frasier for two games on Dec. 18 and 19 at Grand Canyon University Arena.
GCU was victorious, 68-43, in their first meeting with San Francisco State on Nov. 25 at Grand Canyon University Arena as part of the Grand Canyon University Thanksgiving Classic. The ‘Lopes won their last match-up against Cal State Stanislaus, 70-62, on Dec. 11, 2010 in San Francisco as part of the PacWest/CCAA Challenge.
The ‘Lopes are coming off their first loss of the season, a 63-59 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 3 in their PacWest Conference opener in Phoenix. The 63 points scored by Notre Dame de Namur were the most the GCU defense has allowed this season as they lead the PacWest with 50.2 points-allowed-per-game.
Stevie Kamp was named to the PacWest Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for her efforts vs. Notre Dame de Namur, which included an 11-point performance with two assists and eight rebounds.
Maylinn Smith will lead the charge for GCU as her 15.8 points-per-game average is tops in the PacWest. Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in each of her five games this season, including a career-high 21-point effort on Nov. 19 vs. Adams State.
Jallisa Butler's .630 field goal percentage (17-for-27) leads the PacWest, while her 7.2 rebounds-per-game rank seventh. Butler has been the team’s top rebounder in three of their five games, including a team-high nine rebounds on Nov. 26 vs. CSU Dominguez Hills.
