VS. SIMON FRASER: GCU will be facing Simon Fraser for the second time after defeating the Clan, 64-48, yesterday in Phoenix. Simon Fraser is a member of NCAA’s Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference and enters tonight’s game sporting a 5-2 record.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: GCU will play their final home game of 2011 tonight before hitting the road for games against PacWest foes Dominican on Jan. 3 and Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 5. The ‘Lopes return to Grand Canyon University Arena on Jan. 11 for a matchup against Dominican.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon defeated Simon Fraser, 64-48, yesterday in the first of back-to-back games against the Clan. The ‘Lopes were led by Maylinn Smith’s 17 points and Jenna Pearson’s 7 rebounds. GCU had seven players score at least five points as the team shot 43.5 percent from the field. The ‘Lopes outrebounded their opponent (43-37) for the seventh time this season and are 6-1 in those contests.
STAT SPEAK: GCU ranks sixth in the nation in scoring defense with 49.9 points-per-game. The Antelopes’ 40.8 shooting percentage from the field through eight regular season games is the second-best mark in the PacWest behind Hawai’i Pacific’s 41.2 percent. GCU leads the conference with a 37.0 success rate from behind the arc and a 12.2 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler leads the conference with a 63.0 field goal percentage. Maylinn Smith’s 15.5 points-per-game average is second-best in the conference, while Butler’s 9.3 rebounds-per-game mark also ranks second.
MAYLINN FINDING A WAY: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in each of the team’s eight games this season, including a career-high 21 point performance in GCU’s 57-50 win over Adams State on Nov. 19. Smith owns a 36.1 shooting percentage, including a 36.6 mark from the three-point line and a 92.7 percentage from the free throw line. Smith was named to the PacWest Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for Dec. 5-11 after averaging 14.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the CCAA/PacWest Shootout on Dec. 9-10.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 9.3 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State, surpassing her previous high of 17 rebounds set on Feb. 21, 2011 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. Butler was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11 after averaging 11.5 points and 16.0 rebounds in the CCAA/PacWest Shootout.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently ranked 15
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: Following the Antelopes’ game against Simon Fraser tonight, they will embark on 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests, having already played one game against Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 3 in Phoenix, a 63-59 loss. The ‘Lopes also lost their first conference game last season before winning 15 straight PacWest games en route to a Sweet 16 appearance.
