The 15th-ranked Grand Canyon University women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday and Monday with a pair of non-conference games against Simon Fraser. Game times are slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday and 6 p.m. on Monday.
VS. SIMON FRASER: GCU will be facing Simon Fraser for the first time in school history. Simon Fraser is a member of NCAA’s Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference and enters tonight’s game sporting a 5-1 record.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU will play back-to-back games against Simon Fraser before hitting the road for games against PacWest foes Dominican on Jan. 3 and Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 5.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon won both of their contests as part of the CCAA/PacWest Shootout, defeating Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 9 and San Francisco State on Dec. 10. The ‘Lopes recorded their most lopsided win of the season vs. Cal State Stanislaus, 81-52.
Jallisa Butler recorded a double-double in both contests and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in GCU’s 54-46 triumph over San Francisco State en route to being named tournament MVP.
Maylinn Smith also garnered All-Tournament Team honors.
STAT SPEAK: GCU ranks sixth in the nation in scoring defense with 49.9 points-per-game. The Antelopes’ 40.4 shooting percentage from the field through seven regular season games is the third-best mark in the PacWest behind California Baptist’s 41.0 percent and Hawai’i Pacific’s 40.6 percent. GCU leads the conference with a 37.6 success rate from behind the arc and a 13.1 rebounding margin.
MAYLINN FINDING A WAY: Sophomore guard/forward
Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in each of the team’s seven games this season, including a career-high 21 point performance in GCU’s 57-50 win over Adams State on Nov. 19. Smith owns a 36.1 shooting percentage, including a 36.7 mark from the three-point line and a 92.3 percentage from the free throw line. Smith was named to the PacWest Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for Dec. 5-11 after averaging 14.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the CCAA/PacWest Shootout last weekend.
BUTLER ON THE BOARDS: Senior forward
Jallisa Butler leads the team with a 9.7 rebounds-per-game average. Butler had a career-high 19 rebounds on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State, surpassing her previous high of 17 rebounds set on Feb. 21, 2011 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. Butler was named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week for games contested Dec. 5-11 after averaging 11.5 points and 16.0 rebounds in the CCAA/PacWest Shootout.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently ranked 15
th in the poll.
CONFERENCE PLAY: Following the Antelopes’ two games against Simon Fraser, they will embark on 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests, having already played one game against Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 3 in Phoenix, a 63-59 loss. The ‘Lopes also lost their first conference game last season before winning 15 straight PacWest games en route to a Sweet 16 appearance.
