The Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team held off a furious second-half rally by Adams State, winning 57-50, tonight at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix.
It was the second win in as many nights for the 14th-ranked Antelopes (2-0). It was also GCU's 17th-straight regular-season win and 17th-straight home win. The team last lost at home on March 4, 2010.
GCU jumped out to a 36-21 first-half lead behind 57.7% (15-for-26) shooting from the floor.
Maylinn Smith scored 10 of her game-high 21 points during the half.
The Antelopes started cold from the field in the second half, making only 2 of their first 15 shots. The Grizzlies (1-3) took full advantage, closing the lead to four on a number of occasions.
GCU, as was the case in last night’s win, closed out the game at the foul line. The ‘Lopes made 13-of-14 from the line in the second half, after hitting 9-of-10 last night. Smith was 8-for-9 from the line tonight.
“I’m proud of our girls and how resilient they were tonight,” said head coach Trent May. “Our girls did a really nice job defensively in the second half when things tightened up. Being up 15 is never as comfortable as fans might think it is. But it was great to see our team continue to dig in and keep us in the game. I take that reference point there and am excited for what we will be able to do.”
Jallisa Butler added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Joslynn Frazier scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Grand Canyon will next be in action on Nov. 25, when they take on San Francisco State at 5 p.m. in GCU Arena.
