The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated San Francisco State tonight 68-43 at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix.
The win was the 18
th-straight home win and 18
th-straight regular season win for GCU.
“The biggest thing we needed to do was to hold our composure and be really disciplined,” said head coach Trent May. “This San Francisco State team had nothing to lose end everything to play for and to beat a team like us in our tournament gave them a lot of motivation. We knew we would get their best shot and we stayed composed and battled through some tough spots out there.”
The ‘Lopes shot 47.9 percent from the field and were 16-for-20 (80.0 percent) at the free throw line.
Grand Canyon had four players score in double figures, led by
Maylinn Smith’s 17 points. She shot 4-for-4 from the 3-point arc and added seven rebounds.
Jenna Pearson added 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor.
Natalie Markovich contributed 11 points, while
Jallisa Butler had 10 points.
“I’m really proud of how Natalie played in her first collegiate start,” added May. “She is such a steady player and great ball handler. Jenna Pearson gave us a big lift off the bench. All of her hard work and efforts in practice really paid off tonight.”
In her first game for the ‘Lopes,
Chigozie Ekweozor was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free throw line to finish the night with eight points.
The Antelopes broke open a tightly contested first half with a 16-5 run over the final eight minutes, including a 10-0 stretch to extend their lead to 24-15 with just over four minutes left. Markovich added six points during the run. GCU finished out the first half by scoring six unanswered points.
The ‘Lopes dominated on the boards, outrebounding San Francisco State 48-30, their highest mark of the young season, and had 26 points off the bench compared to 11 points off the San Francisco State bench.
Grand Canyon will next be in action when they face Cal-State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m. tomorrow at GCU Arena. San Francisco State will play Missouri University of Science & Technology at noon.
