The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills tonight 60-42 at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 4-0 on the season.
The win was the 19
th-straight home win and 19
th-straight regular season win for GCU.
Maylinn Smith led the charge, scoring 12 points, including a 5-for-5 mark at the free throw line. Smith has been the ‘Lopes’ leading scorer in each of their first four games, averaging 17.3 points per game.
Erica Paskell added 11 points with a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc.
GCU trailed for a majority of the first half before using an 11-3 run to take a 26-23 lead over Dominguez Hills heading into halftime. The Antelopes had a 14-5 stretch over the final four minutes of the first half, with four points apiece from Paskell and Smith. The ‘Lopes were 7-for-13 from the field over the final eight minutes and committed just one turnover in that time after having turned the ball over 10 times in the first 12 minutes.
“We have been getting off to slow starts this season and preached for that not to happen after last night’s game, but we did,” said head coach Trent May. “At the very end of the first half there was a play with a loose ball and it had to be one of their players to pick it up and get a shot off. There are eight players to make a play on that and it kind of summarized our first half.”
The ‘Lopes responded well, outscoring Dominguez Hills 34-19 in the second half, including a 7-0 run to open the half, four of which were scored by
Jallisa Butler.
GCU outrebounded their opponent for the second straight night, 51-25, for their highest mark of the season and were led by Butler’s eight rebounds. The ‘Lopes bench also provided a spark in the game, scoring 27 points on 13-for-31 shooting (41.9 percent) and accounted for six of GCU’s 10 steals in the game.
GCU will next be in action when they host PacWest foe Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 3 at 4:30 p.m. at Grand Canyon University Arena.
