The 14th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team opened their 2011-12 campaign with a hard fought 62-53 win over Nebraska-Kearney at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
The Antelopes led 37-35 midway into the second half, but used a 13-3 run to close out their first win of the season. Jallisa Butler and Joslynn Frazier each scored four points during the three-minute stretch.
GCU’s defensive pressure was a factor all night long as they forced UNK into 28 turnovers. The ‘Lopes had 13 steals during the night, four from both Maylinn Smith and Butler.
“It’s not going to be pretty right now and we know that,” said head coach Trent May. “But we can use our defense to really hold opponents to low scoring nights and we did that tonight.”
Grand Canyon lost on the boards this evening, 38-36, but dominated the points in the paint, outscoring the Lopers 34-22.
“We are definitely a work in progress as is any team that is 1-0,” said May. “The little things stand out right now and Petrolina Chilaka certainly is that. Tonight was her first experience in a collegiate game, as she did not play in the exhibition season due to a concussion she suffered during practice. She has a lot of athletically ability and puts on a lot of defensive pressure on our opponent. She is behind offensively from where we know she will be, but at the same time she gave us a huge spark in tonight’s game.”
Chilaka scored six points tonight on 2-for-5 shooting from the field.
Smith, a sophomore guard and Preseason All-PacWest Conference selection, led all scorers with 19 points on 5-for-12 shooting. She was 8-for-8 from the foul line.
“Maylinn is a gamer and she knows how to finish and put the ball in the basket,” added May. “She puts her teammates in successful situations. She is a very special player.”
Grand Canyon will not get much time to enjoy tonight’s season opening victory as they will be back on the court tomorrow to face Adams State at 6 p.m. in GCU Arena. Nebraska-Kearney will play Dixie State at 4 p.m.
