Grand Canyon (16-6, 9-4) earned its eighth straight win with a 3-0 Pacific West Conference victory over Hawai’i Pacific (11-8, 6-4) at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
The Antelopes won by set scores of 26-24, 25-23, 25-21.
“Our girls did a great job of following the game plan and making good adjustments,” said GCU coach Kris Naber. “They were very disciplined in their play. It was definitely a team effort.
“We showed good composure and played consistently. We had a goal tonight and achieved it.”
Junior outside hitter
Janae Giles led a balanced GCU attack in kills with 12 and added 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Caelen Hiller had 11 kills, a .250 hitting percentage and 11 digs. Junior middle hitter
Shelby Taylor had 10 kills, with only one error and a .500 hitting percentage.
Junior
Kristen Preach had 42 assists and 19 digs. Freshman libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 19 digs.
Though it was a 3-0 sweep, it was a tightly contested match. In the first set, the teams exchanged leads six times and had 13 ties. There were four ties in the second set. Grand Canyon jumped out to an early third set lead and led 12-4 before the Sea Warriors battled back to get within three.
The ’Lopes hit .400 as a team in the third set with 21 kills on 45 attempts and only three errors.
Senior right side hitter
Brooke Blomenkamp had five kills in the third set. Giles, Taylor and senior middle hitter
Stephanie McBride each had four. Preach had 19 assists in the third set.
Naber and coaching staff also acknowledged Saturday’s fan support. “Our fans were amazing,” said Naber, of the large, loud and supportive group at Antelope Gym.
GCU looks for its ninth straight against New Mexico Highlands 1 p.m. Monday at Western New Mexico University.
