Grand Canyon University will take its team -- and a lot of momentum -- to the Marriott Mountain Lion Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. this weekend.
Fresh off a Tuesday night come-from-behind win over Western New Mexico, the Antelopes (2-3) are riding high heading to the Rocky Mountain State.
In a 3-2 win in the home opener, GCU trailed 2-1 in sets and 12-7 in the fifth set, before rallying to score the final eight points of the match to defeat WNMU.
For the second straight weekend, GCU will play four matches in two days. It went 1-3 last weekend at Sonoma State and is hopeful to fare better in the win-loss column at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
GCU opens play Friday against Lees-McRae (8 a.m. Phoenix time) and will also take on Fort Lewis (3:30 p.m.). On Saturday, Grand Canyon tangles with Winona State at 10:30 a.m. and host UCCS at 6 p.m.
It will be GCU's first-ever meeting with Lees-McRae (1-4) and only second contest with Winona State (3-1), GCU lost in the only other match in 2007.
The Antelopes are most familiar with Fort Lewis (4-0), which they beat last season 3-2 at the Colorado Mines Invitational and own a 17-11 lead in the all-time series. Grand Canyon is 2-1 against UCCS (2-3), last playing in 2006.
GCU junior libero
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) goes into the weekend only one dig behind Ashley Handley (2003-06) for third place on the school's all-time list. Durbin has 1,215 and is the program's single-season record holder with 584, set last season. She is only 11 digs behind JoDee Boyer (1992-95) for second place and trails all-time leader Amber LaTarte (1996-99, 1,345) by 130.
