Sophomore midfielder/forward Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun) scored one goal and had two assists to lead the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team to a 4-0 rout of New Mexico Highlands University this morning at the GCU Soccer Field.
She has three goals in the first three games for the Antelopes, who improved to 2-1-0 on the season. The Cowgirls fell to 1-1-0.
Nesic's goal came in the seventh minute of today's game off of an assist by senior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson, Chandler-Gilbert CC). Her shot went off the keeper and rolled past the goal line. It was Nesic's first goal of the season that was not scored on a penalty kick.
In the 47th minute, sophomore midfielder Sasha Scott (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) scored her first goal of the season and second of her GCU career. It came on a long shot, and the keeper didn't hold on to the ball.
The 'Lopes' third goal actually was an own goal that bounced off of an NMHU player and into the net. Nesic was credited with an assist on the goal, which came on a corner kick.
GCU's final goal was scored by freshman Fiona Moloney (Limerick, Ireland/St. Mary's Secondary), who received a pass from Nesic on a breakaway and found the back of the net.
The 'Lopes had an 18-11 advantage in shots in the game; 12 of their shots were on goal. They had four fewer corner kicks (7-3).
Junior Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol, Washington State University) and freshman Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) combined on the shutout. It was Phillips' first win since transferring to GCU this year.
