The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team defeated Dominican University of California 2-1 in overtime today in San Rafael, Calif. It was the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams.
The Antelopes improved to 3-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the PacWest. The Penguins fell to 0-4-0, 0-1-0 and suffered their second straight 2-1 overtime loss this season. They lost by same score to Saint Martin's last Friday.
The winning goal was scored in the 99th minute on a great cross from freshman forward
Veronica Nikas (Scottsdale, AZ/Veritas Preparatory Academy), who came on in overtime. She got past one player on the left wing and crossed it to junior defender
Julia Anglin (Goodyear, AZ/Desert Edge, Scottsdale CC), who was running in and hit a bullet of a header into the top left-hand corner of the net.
The first goal was scored by freshman forward
Fiona Moloney (Limerick, Ireland/St. Mary's Secondary School) in the 43rd minute. The goalkeeper mishandled the ball and Moloney was there to put it in the back of the net.
Two 'Lopes suffered injuries in the match. Senior forward
Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson, Chandler-Gilbert CC) got clobbered from behind on a header, and freshman forward
Rebecca Laporte (London, England/Ashmole) strained her quad.

Jessica Scarpati (Las Vegas, NV/Shadow Ridge) came on as a substitute in the overtime period and won the midfield for us, and (sophomore defender)
Milica Mihajlovic (Novi Sad/Serbia/Chemistry School) was a steady rock in the back.
"It wasn't a pretty win, but it was a win nonetheless."
