Sophomore midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun) scored a school record five goals to lead the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team to a 6-1 rout over Academy of Art today at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco.
Nesic took seven shots in the game. Six of them were on goal, and five found the back of the net. This from a player who missed the past two seasons, last year due to a knee injury.
She broke Patti Reed's record of four goals scored against Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 6, 2000.
Nesic scored in the eighth minute, 10th minute, 30th minute and twice in the 61st minute to give the Antelopes a 5-0 lead.
The first goal came on a free kick. On the second, she dribbled through defenders before shooting. On the third, she dribbled past them. The fifth was on a penalty kick.
Head Coach Stevie Gill said she could have scored at least twice more if he hadn't taken her out with 29 minutes left. After her fifth goal, the Urban Knights' goalkeeper, Melissa Co, received a yellow card. "It was The Marina Nesic Show," Gill said.
Senior forward
Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson, Chandler-Gilbert CC) scored on a cross from junior forward
Jessica Brillantes (Anaheim, CA/Loara, Santiago Canyon College) in the 77th minute for good measure.
Junior Stephanie Phillips
(Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol, Washington State University) and freshman
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) each played 45 minutes in goal for GCU and combined for five saves. Academy of Art didn't light up the scoreboard until the 81st minute, when forward/midfielder Megan Bucci dribbled coast to coast for the score.
The 'Lopes had an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
GCU improved to 4-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art fell to 1-2-1, 0-2-0.
The 'Lopes take on Hawai'i Hilo in a neutral-site game at 11:30 a.m. in Belmont, Calif. That game is hosted by Notre Dame de Namur University, which GCU will play at 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday in Belmont to end this four-game trip to the Bay Area.
Their next home game is against BYU-Hawaii at 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the GCU Soccer Field.
