Junior defender
Julia Anglin (Goodyear, AZ/Desert Edge, Scottsdale CC) scored two goals and sophomore midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun) scored one to lead the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the University of Hawai'i at Hilo in a neutral-site game today at Belmont, Calif.
It was the second time in the past three games that Anglin, who started at forward today, has scored the winning goal. She scored the game-winner in the Antelopes' 2-1 overtime win against Dominican University of California on Friday in San Rafael, Calif.
Nesic now has a team- and Pacific West Conference-leading 10 goals, six in the past two games. She broke the school and PacWest single-game record with five goals in Saturday's 6-1 victory over Academy of Art in San Francisco. The GCU record for most goals in a season is 13, set by Vanessa Young in 2005. Nesic already is tied for third on the school single-season list.
The 'Lopes improved to 5-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 1-4-1, 0-3-0.
Nesic broke into the scoring column 1:32 into the game when she took a shot from 30 yards, it hit off the cross bar and went in.
Anglin made the score 2-0 in the 43rd minute when she headed in a rebound off of the cross bar. Freshman forward
Veronica Nikas (Scottsdale, AZ/Veritas Prep) assisted on the goal, just as she did on Anglin's game-winning goal on Friday.
Anglin's second goal today came in the 52nd minute when Nesic took a free kick that went through the defense and Anglin poked it past the keeper.
Junior goalkeeper
Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol, Washington State University) recorded her first solo shutout of the season after splitting one with freshman
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) against New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 7. Phillips was credited with the win in that game. She had one save today.
GCU, playing its third game in six days, had a 25-4 edge in corner kicks and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The 'Lopes were issued two yellow cards, and Hawai'i-Hilo defender Jessica Snell received a red card and was ejected from the game.
Alysia Ann Barone posted 12 saves for the Vulcans.
GCU ends this eight-day, four-game trip to the Bay Area with a 4:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday against Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif.
