The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team lost to Cal State University San Bernardino, 2-1, in overtime tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Antelopes won their season opener on Friday by the same score.
Tonight, sophomore midfielder/forward
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun) connected on a penalty kick in the 27th minute to give GCU a 1-0 lead. It was Nesic's second goal of the season. Both have come on penalty kicks.
The lead held up until the 61st minute, when the Coyotes' Jani Carmona got the ball, dribbled it a little bit and shot it into the goal.
In the ninth minute of overtime, Carmona found Kristina Gomez with an excellent cross, and Gomez kicked it into the Upper 90 to give CSUSB the win.
It was an evenly-matched game. GCU had a 9-8 advantage in shots, but only three of the 'Lopes' shots were on goal vs. five for the Coyotes. CSUSB had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
GCU will face New Mexico Highlands University, a 4-1 winner tonight over Saint Martin's University (which GCU defeated on Friday), at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the GCU Soccer Field.
